The importance of the 7R Concept and Upgraded Recycling in Terms of Sustainable Design

Abstract
Sustainable design includes strategies that optimize resource use and minimize waste generation. In this context, the 7R concept (Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repair, Renew, Recycle, Upcycle) covers a wide range of processes from preventing unnecessary consumption to re-evaluating materials. In particular, upcycling aims to increase the value of materials compared to recycling and create more functional and aesthetic designs.
This study was prepared based on literature reviews, concept analyses, applications in design platforms and expert opinions in order to reveal the potential of upcycling in sustainable design. Upcycling, which is becoming increasingly widespread in areas such as fashion, furniture and industrial design, not only saves resources but also adds a creative dimension to design processes. In addition, it makes significant contributions to issues such as reducing energy consumption, protecting cultural heritage and supporting innovative design processes.
As a result, upcycling, evaluated within the framework of the 7R strategy, plays a critical role in design disciplines for a sustainable future and offers the opportunity to develop innovative solutions.
